Hometwon Christmas in Maywood
Sherri Werkmeister, Jeannie Knoles, Mary Moore, Janie Ralston and Betty Werkmeister share coffee and treats at the Maywood VFW during the Holiday Business Open House event Curtis Congregational Church ClosesThe last service of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Curtis will be held on Sunday, December 18th at 9:30AM. The members of the church have made the difficult decision to close the church permanently. According to Sandy Stencel, Moderator, the average attendance is less than ten people, and the expense to keep the physical building operating has required most of the church’s savings. The church was founded in approximately 1888 and has served its members and the community from its current location since 1926. The 85 year old building will be up for sale soon. The church sits on the corner of 5th and Howard in Curtis. It is described by many in the area as a “beautiful building”. More than the physical structure, however, there are the memories. Stencel said her fondest memories come from raising her children in the church. They especially had “…such fun Christmas programs.” Things never went quite right but that was what made it the most fun. The church also owns the Thrift Shop in the Curtis community. They plan to work to assure that it remains open. “It is a much needed service within the community and for those who work there,” said Stencel. “We will all be OK; there are plenty of churches in the community to serve our members. We’ll all find a new church home,” said Stencel. |
