Earhart Wins County Spelling Bee

Photo by Dottie Evans Jade Earhart (left), an eighth grader at Medicine Valley, will represent Frontier County at the Nebraska State Spelling Bee to be held in Omaha during March. Runners-up were Bryar Gerlach from Maywood Schools and Colton Thompson of Eustis- Farnam Schools.

The winner of the 2012 Frontier County Spelling Bee was Jade Earhart an eighth grader at Medicine Valley Public Schools. Second went to Bryar Gerlach from Maywood and Third to Colton Thompson of Eustis-Farnam. The yearly event was held at Medicine Valley High School on Thursday, February 2nd.

A total of sixty students were involved. Five from each grade, fifth through eighth, from each school, including Maywood, Eustis-Farnam and Medicine Valley. The event was organized by Kaye Banzhaf; the pronouncer was Linda Widick and Judges were Tom and Karon Rue.

The first part of the Spelling Bee was a written test. Several “spell offs” were necessary to determine the top twenty spellers that moved to the second part of the competition, the oral portion.

One round of practice was offered to the twenty students so they could be comfortable with the process, then the oral portion began. The field was quickly narrowed when only five students successfully spelled their word in the first round.

Winner, Earhart was determined with two more rounds when she correctly spelled “hospice”. It took 24 additional rounds between Gerlach and Thompson to determine 2nd and 3rd place.

Earhart is now qualified to go to the Nebraska State Spelling Bee which will be in Omaha at Creighton University on March 10th.
