Melanie Emma Koch - July 14, 2014

Melanie Emma Koch, 50, of Lincoln, passed away on July 14, 2014. She was born to Harold and Marcella (Whisler) Koch of Eustis, NE, on June 12, 1964. Melanie was a graduate of Eustis Public Schools and the University of NE-Kearney. She was a dedicated and highly respected employee of the Lancaster County Corrections Department for 24 years, beginning her career as an officer and rising to Records Manager.
Melanie was a kind and loving person, and was completely unaware of the positive influence she had on others. She loved her family and friends deeply. She was the primary caregiver for her mother during the past seven years. She also loved all of God’s creatures, rising early in the mornings to fill bird feeders and birdbaths, setting out food and water for stray cats, even having a special house built for them to provide safety and shelter.
Melanie is survived by her mother, Marcella, and older siblings: Miriam (Kim) Stratton, Vivian (Dale) Brittenham, Valerie (David) Dore, Monte (Chris) Koch, Jeff Koch, and Allison (Kevin) Workman; 13 nieces and nephews, and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; and her beloved cat Simon. Melanie is also survived by a host of close friends and co-workers. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold, grandparents, and her cats Olan and Samoa. Her legacy is one of love and kindness to everyone.
It was Melanie’s wish to be cremated and that no funeral service or visitation be held; however, the family will host an informal gathering in celebration of her life on Sunday, July 20, 1:00-3:00pm, at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln, NE. In lieu of flowers, Melanie would have preferred that memorials be given to: The Cat House, 1935 Q Street, Lincoln, NE 68503; Capital Humane Society, 2320 Park Blvd., Lincoln, NE 68502; or Cause for Paws, 2445 S. 48th St., Lincoln, NE 68506.
