Wayne and Nancy Keller named 2014 Wurst Tag Royalty

This year the people of Eustis are honoring two very special members of their community as part of the 35th Annual Wurst Tag Celebration on June 14th. Wayne and Nancy Keller have been selected as the Wurst Tag Royalty, the Burgermeister and the Burgermeisterin.

Wayne grew up on a farm near Eustis and has lived in the area all his life.  Wayne’s parents were Clarence and Alice Keller of Eustis.  His siblings include Evelyn Bartruff, Janice Smith, and Dean Keller all of Eustis, and the late Kenneth Keller.

Nancy grew up on a farm northwest of Gothenburg where she lived with her parents, Ernest and Edna Jobman.

Both Wayne and Nancy attended elementary classes at a rural school.  Wayne attended District #44 near Eustis through his seventh grade year, and Nancy attended a country school near Gothenburg for eight years.  Wayne finished his education and graduated from Eustis High School, and Nancy went to high school and graduated from Gothenburg High School.

The Kellers were married August 21, 1955, and were blessed with three sons.  Bert and his wife, Cheryl, Brad and his wife, Marcia, and Bill and his wife, Julie, all live in the Eustis area.  Wayne and Nancy have eight grandchildren: Kevin, Kylie, Kane, Allie, Justin, Chad, Weston, and Landon, and two great-grandchildren: Brylynn and Skyler.

Farming, raising cattle, and raising hogs have been Wayne’s passion since his youth.  While still living at home, Wayne worked on the family farm with his father, Clarence, and his brother, Kenneth.  In 1952 Wayne started to farm on his own, and in 1967 he purchased a farm from Clarence Keller. Gottleib Keller originally owned the farm.  Wayne and Nancy moved into the home that was located on the farm they purchased in 1967 and raised their three sons there.  In 1993 they moved to town. Bill and Julie Keller currently are living on the farm where the Kellers lived for many years.

Both Wayne and Nancy have been active members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Eustis.  Wayne started singing in the church choir at the age of 12.  Besides being a member of the choir, Wayne served on the Church Council.  Nancy was a charter member of the Dorcas Circle and sang in the choir after the couple was married.

Community involvement has been a big part of their lives.  Wayne has been a long time member of the Eustis Lions Club, served on the Creamery Board, and served on the Elevator Board.  Nancy has served as secretary of the FOOI Committee, the Economic Development Group, since the organization was formed.  She has also served on the community Zoning Board.

The couple has always been very involved with the activities of their sons and their families. Wayne and Nancy greatly enjoy spending time with family and friends as well as playing cards and occasionally taking their 1958 Chevy Convertible for a drive.  In their younger years they enjoyed dancing.  The Kellers have taken some trips together to Europe, Mexico, Canada, and Branson, Missouri, and have also taken a Panama Canal Cruise and an Alaskan Cruise.

The Village of Eustis is very fortunate to have Wayne and Nancy Keller as community members.  The Kellers are very dedicated, hard-working, and supportive citizens.  It is an honor for the people of Eustis to have them as the Burgermeister and the Burgermeisterin for the 2014 Wurst Tag Celebration.
