The Medicine Valley wrestling team competed at the Nebraska State Championships this past weekend in Omaha. Senior Rulon Taylor won the gold in the 220 lb weight division in class D for Medicine Valley and remained undefeated in a tremendous season with a 37 - 0 record.
Taylor started the championship meet in round 1 with a win by pin over Taylor Alcorn of Crawford in 2:42. In the quarterfinal, Rulon Taylor won by major decision over Gatlin Jensen of Winside (Maj 10-1). The Semifinal had Taylor winning by pin over Stevin Horrocks of Hay Springs with a pin in 3:10. That lead to the first place match which he won by pin over Jacob Woockman of Lutheran High Northeast in 4:15 in an exciting match. Taylor scored twenty nine team points.
“He’s been a pinner all year, he’s been working,” said Medicine Valley coach Barry Mraz. “When he gets an opportunity he takes advantage of it.
“He lives off of other people’s mistakes and doesn’t make any himself. He saw the opening and grabbed it and went all the way, so I was proud to see that.” According to a quote in the North Platte Telegraph.
Junior Thomas Foster, Senior Ty Contrerez and Junior Quinten Chancellor also competed for Medicine Valley and represented the Raiders well at State.
In the first round of the 126 lb weight division in class D, Foster lost in a 7-5 decision to Brian Neiveen of Freeman. In the consolation round one, Foster won by pin over Marc Cinnoco of Minatare with a pin in 2:49. In round two of the consolation match Foster won again by pin over Levi Ray of Hay Springs in 4:43. In round 3, Foster lost by a major decision to Brandt Florell of Amherst 10-1 to finish out his season with a 39-10 record. Foster scored six team points.
Senior Ty Conterez competed in 145 lb. weight division and lost by a decision to Dillion Schnuerle of Franklin 9-2 in the first round. In the Consolation round one Contrerez lost by a decision to Lane Kizzire of Bayard 9-6. Contrerez had a 25-19 record and did not score any team points.
Junior Quinten Chancellor competed in the 182 lb. weight division and lost in the first round to Gerrit Vanengen of Freeman in a 10-8 decision. Round one of the consolation saw Chancellor winning a 10-3 decision over Austin Wiley of Bayard. Round two consolation, Chancellor lost by a major decision 18-6. He finished the season with a 28-9 record. He scored one team point.
