The Medicine Valley Raider football team opened the 2013 season last Friday night against the Elwood Pirates at home in Curtis. In a game that saw two weather delays and lasted nearly four hours the home team fell short and lost 34-26.

On offense the team was led by junior Chase Barthel who rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown while also throwing for 44 yards as quarterback. Junior Cody Aspenleiter rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Quinten Chancellor rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown. Aspenleiter also led the team in receiving with one catch for 29 yards.

On defense junior Keaton Lenz led the team with nine solo tackles and four assisted tackles. Joining Lenz on defense was Quinten Chancellor who recorded seven solo tackles, one assisted tackle, and hauled in an interception.

The Raiders started the scoring on the night when Barthel ran for a six yard touchdown with 4:42 left in the first quarter. The Raiders failed to convert on the two-point play and led 6-0.

Elwood scored the next two touchdowns of the half and went into the break with a 14-6 lead.

Inclement weather moved into the Curtis area at this point and caused a delay in the game forcing the teams to wait indoors until the weather had passed.

When play resumed Elwood continued their offensive dominance as they scored on a 64-yard pass play with 7:36 left in the third quarter to extend their lead to 21-6. But Medicine Valley answered right away when Cody Aspenleiter scored on a six-yard rush and then Chase Barthel ran the conversion in to bring Medicine Valley to be within seven points of Elwood with a score of 21-14. But that was as close as the Raiders would get as another weather delay delayed the game. Aspenleiter scored his second touchdown of the night with 10:24 left of the fourth quarter with a three yard run. Quinten Chancellor scored the last touchdown with 3:53 left of the game, but it was too little too late and the Raiders fell 34-26.

The Raider’s next play Friday, September 13th at Eustis-Farnam who opens their season this Friday at Hayes Center.Stats:
